New Mexico has its first rabies case of the year.
KOB-TV reports a woman walked near her home in Lincoln County on Monday, and a gray fox bit her leg.
The 78-year-old woman has started preventive therapy. A Game and Fish warden has killed the fox following a positive test.
Game and Fish says gray foxes had a rabies epidemic in New Mexico from 2007 to 2010.
Officials warn you to stay away from dead or injured wildlife, as well as wildlife exhibiting abnormal behavior.
