Jim Montgomery has volunteered over 15,000 hours over the last three decades for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Bitter Lane National Wildlife Refuge.
The Roswell Daily Record reports he started helping out in 1985, but he didn’t really contribute greatly until 1989.
Montgomery has counted sandhill cranes weekly from October through March for the last 26 years.
He has also conducted a five-year study of sandhill crane use of the farmlands and wetlands in Roswell.
