More workers can head underground at WIPP because of a new evacuation area.
The Current Argus reports the number of employees allowed beneath the plant has increased from 75 to 98.
Nuclear Waste Partnership Recovery manager Jim Blankenhorn says this has happened because of this combustible-free zone.
This zone serves as a safe area for workers in the event of an underground fire. It sits underneath shafts to the surface.
WIPP has removed flammable materials and restricted diesel equipment in the area. The equipment can pass through, but it cannot remain there.
