Roswell native dies from burn injuries at Lincoln Co. festival

A Roswell native died Sunday from her injuries at a festival.

The Ruidoso News reports the death of 71-year-old Viola Montes.

This follows a fire at the Smokey Bear Stampede in Captian.

Montes had burns on 57 percent of her body.

The fire during the Fourth of July weekend stemmed from an apparent propane leak.

This supposedly started a fire in her family’s concession stand during the annual rodeo event.

Montes lived in Chaves and Lincoln counties.

The funeral takes place Friday.
