Scam callers claiming to represent Xcel Energy

Roswell Police say people have informed them of a scam.

The police claim residents have received calls from people supposedly representing Xcel Energy.

The caller says the resident owes money and must provide credit card information to pay the bill immediately.

The caller also says the company has someone on the way to turn off the electrical service.

Additionally, the caller provides a callback number. When someone dials that number, a recorded greeting claims the person has reached Xcel.

Xcel Energy says it never contacts its customers this way.

Police say never give financial or other personal identification information over the phone unless you have initiated the call and know that person on the other end.
