Walker Air Force Base soon receives a roadside historic marker.
The base once served as the nation’s largest strategic air command base.
The dedication of this official scenic historic marker happens Sept. 18 at 2 p.m.
It takes place at U.S. 285 and Roswell Relief Route South.
The base’s roots date back to 1941 as Roswell Army Air Field. It bears the name of Brig. Gen. Kenneth Walker, the highest ranking U.S. Army official reported MIA during World War II.
Someone shot down Walker’s plane over Papua, New Guinea in 1943. No one ever found his body.
President Roosevelt awarded Walker the Medal of Honor.
