Congressman Steve Pearce has introduced legislation that would eliminate some Wilderness Study Area designations.
The bill would return some of these areas to the BLM so they can serve other purposes.
Studies portray the lands as unsuitable for the federal wilderness designation, but stripping the lands of this designation requires congressional action.
The Current-Argus reports the Eddy County commission sent a letter to Pearce in May over possibly freeing 28,000 acres of such land in the county.
His communications director says Pearce keeps looking to see whether or not freestanding legislation can address those areas.
