Roswell’s superintendent says he supports the state’s controversial teacher evaulation system.
However, Tom Burris has gone against the state’s policy by renewing the license of a teacher who has received low ratings.
Burris has offered testimony during hearings in Santa Fe on a lawsuit that teachers and Democratic lawmakers have filed.
The suit requests a temporary injuction to stop evaluations that result from testing.
Burris says he has signed the application because his district continues struggling with a staff shortage.
He claims he cannot afford to lose any more teachers.
Burris calls the evaluation system an overall positive step in improving teacher performance.
