State lawmakers seek to fix Carlsbad sinkhole

State lawmakers want to stop the collapse of the sinkhole at Carlsbad’s South Y.

The legislature’s website shows a bill could fix the brine well in Carlsbad.

It requests $150,000 from the state general fund for next year’s budget and through subsequent years.

The Carlsbad I&W Brine Well formed as a solution mine that the company ran at the current location from 1979 to 2008.

The mine, however, closed after its process of injecting fresh water into the ground to dissolve salt and extract brine formed an underground cavern.
