Eddy Co. unemployment highest in six years

Eddy County’s unemployment has jumped to its highest level in six years.

Data fro the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the jobless rate has increased to six percent.

Shannon Summers from the Carlsbad Department of Development suspects the recent large layoffs from Intrepid Potash’s West Mine and the downturn of the oil and gas industry have something to do with it.

The Current-Argus reports mayor Dale Janway agrees.

However, Summers cites a report from Smart Asset that shows a 10.8 percent increase in business establishment in the county.
