Carlsbad Police Department Gets New Chief

BRANDON “SHANE” SKINNER HAS BEEN A DETECTIVE WITH THE CARLSBAD POLICE DEPARTMENT SINCE 2015. HE HAS MORE THAN TWO DECADES EXPERIENCE IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, HAVING SERVED IN BOTH THE SAN JUAN COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT AND THE FARMINGTON POLICE DEPARTMENT. SKINNER ALSO SERVED PREVIOUSLY AS POLICE CHIEF IN IOWA. HE’LL REPLACE OUTGOING POLICE CHIEF KENT WALKER WHO IS RETIRING AFTER 43 YEARS IN LAW ENFORCEMENT. CARLSBAD MAYOR DALE JANWAY SAYS SKINNER HAS A PROVEN RECORD OF LEADERSHIP — ADDING HE IS LOOKING FORWARD TO WORKING WITH THE NEW CHIEF.

Artesia Council Schedules Public Meeting About Signs

The Arteisa City Council is allowing public comment regarding a contentious new sign ordinance. The council was supposed to pass a new law last week, but decided to hold off on the issue in order to get more public feedback. The new ordinance will mostl likely address how large signs can be, but there have also been citizen complaints about flashy signs or large LED signs that blink various bright colors. A special meeting is scheduled for 6pm April 6th in the council chambers at city hall.

THE ARTESIA CITY COUNCIL WILL HOLD A SPECIAL MEETING NEXT FRIDAY, APRIL 6th. COUNCILORS WILL MEET IN A WORK SESSION TO TALK ABOUT AMENDING CHAPTERS ONE, TWO AND ELEVEN OF THE SECTION NINE ARTESIA CITY CODE. AFTER THE WORK SHOP, A PUBLIC HEARING WILL BE HELD WHERE RESIDENTS WILL BE ALLOWED TO COMMENT. THE MEETING IS BEING NEXT FRIDAY NIGHT AT 6 O’CLOCK INSIDE CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS OF ARTESIA CITY HALL.

Waller Retires From Carlsbad PD

The Carlsbad Police Chief, Kent Waller, has retired. Waller spent more than 40 years with the Carlsbad Police Department. Waller was joined by many members of the staff and others in emergency work who honored him Wednesday at the Pecos River Village Conference Center. Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway said there just aren’t words to adequately express how much appreciation the city has for Chief Waller and all he’s done. Waller was also elected Eddy County Sheriff in 2001, serving two terms.

THE 6th ANNUAL WALK AGAINST CHILD ABUSE STARTS NEXT FRIDAY MORNING AT 8:45 AT THE CARLSBAD CYFD OFFICE. THE WALK WILL END AT THE CARLSBAD COURTHOUSE. UPON COMPLETION OF THE WALK, CARLSBAD MAYOR DALE JANWAY WILL GIVE A SHORT PRESENTATION. JUDGE JAND SHULER-GRAY IS LISTED AS THE EVENT’S GUEST SPEAKER.

OTHER ITEMS ON THE AGENDA INCLUDE AN UPDATE ON CONSTRUCTION OF A DEPARTMENT OFFICE COMPLEX IN ROSWSELL. AS WELL AS UPDATES ON THE DEPARTMENT’S HUNTER EDUCATION PROGRAM AND A HABITAT RESTORATION PROJECT IN THE COLIN NEBLETT WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA. NEXT THURSDAY’S MEETING IS BEING HELD AT THE CLOVIS CIVIC CENTER ENCHANTED BALL ROOM FROM 9-TO-5.

AT 1 O’CLOCK, THERE WILL BE A GRAND OPENING FOR THE NEW I-CENTER. THERE IS ALSO A SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY CEREMONY AND RECEPTION AT 2 O’CLOCK INSIDE THE ADMINISTRATION CENTER LOBBY ON CAMPUS.
