FIREFIGHTERS WERE CALLED TO A HOME ON SOUTH MULBERRY AVENUE AROUND 8-30 MONDAY NIGHT BECAUSE OF A FIRE. CREWS WERE ABLE TO RESCUE AN 88-YEAR-OLD MAN AND A 69-YEAR-OLD WOMAN…HOWEVER, BOTH OF THEM DIED FROM THEIR INJURIES. THE FIRE MARSHAL HAS DETERMINED THE FIRE WAS CAUSED BY AN OPEN FLAME — LIKELY A CIGARETTE OR CIGARETTE LIGHTER — TOO CLOSE TO AN OXYGEN CONCENTRATOR. IN A SEPARATE FIRE, EARLIER MONDAY NIGHT…FIREFIGHTERS RESCUED A 59-YEAR-OLD WOMAN FROM A SEPARATE STRUCTURE FIRE IN A MOBILE HOME…ALSO BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY A CIGARATTE. Artesia Man Sentenced For Meth Trafficking Across Two States

Fouir decades in prison is the sentence for an Artesia man convicted for narcotics trafficking. The Pecos Valley Drug Task Force arrested 35 year-old Christopher Granado, who eventually pleaded guilty to a charge of racketeering in Louisiana. A judge sentenced Granado to 40 years hard labor at Angola Prison in Angole, Louisiana. Authoritie ssay Granado ran a large scale drug ring that supplied methamphetamine to users in Artesia and in Vernon Parish, Louisiana.

Devon Energy To Conduct Emergency Response Training Tuesday

Devon Energy Corporation says it will be conduicting a training exercise today, so the company says you can expect to see lots of activity around their building at 6488 Seven Rivers Highway. It’s all part of Devon’s emergency response plan and it’s only a training exercise today. The exercise will be coordinated with Artesia and Eddy County emergency response organizations, and during the exercise, residents may notice emergency personnel, vehicles, and mock medical services at Devon’s office.

$5 Drug Deal Leads To Attempted Kidnapping In Artesia

On the police beat, Artesia autrhorities say a 5-dollar drug deal led to the attempted kidnapping of two people. It all started on March 15th when a New Mexico State Trooper reportedly overheard officers being sent to the area of 26th and Fairgrounds Road for the report of a kidnapping in progress. The trooper arrived and found five people around a blue car, but the men scattered as soon as the trooper pulled up. He was able to stop the fleeing pickup truck and detain the five men inside. As other officers went to the scene back on Fairgrounds, the victim said that he and the woman with him were held at gunpoint after the men chased them down because they owed them five dollars for a drug deal.
