CHAVES COUNTY DEPUTIES WERE CALLED OUT TO THE LAKE AT 6-10 WEDNESDAY NIGHT. WITNESSES SAID A MAN JUMPED INTO THE DEVILS INK WELL LAKE FROM THE BLUFFS ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE LAKE AND NEVER RESURFACED. ABOUT AN HOUR LATER DIVERS RECOVERED THE BODY OF 22-YEAR-OLD ALFREDO OSORNIO OF ARTESIA. THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE ESTIMATES THE JUMP FROM THE CLIFFS AT ROUGHLY 200 FEET. INVESTIGATORS SAY OSORNIO LIKELY HIT THE WATER HEAD FIRST RENDERING HIM UNCONSCIOUS. HIS BODY WAS RECOVERED AT A DEPTH OF 27 FEET.

Nearly 700 Ballots Cast Early In Primary Election

The Eddy County clerk confirms that nearly 700 residents have already voted early, ahead of next week’s primary election. Almost 600 people cast a ballot at the clerk’s office in Carlsbad, while another 125 cast a ballot at the sub-office in Artesia. This is a primary election, so you will vote for your party representatives to move on to the general election later this year. Voters must identify with a specific party in order to vote in the primary election. Races include county commissioner districts 1 & 4, magistrate judge division 1, 2 & 3, county clerk, county assessor, probate judge, and state representatives in districts 54 & 55.

Kellar Fire Grows to 643 Acres; Smoke Visible

The community of Queen is being affected by the Kellar Fire that is burning within the Lincoln National Forest. A statement late Wednesday from ther Pecos Zone Interagency Incident Management Team says no structures are currently in imminent danger. The Sitting Bull Falls trail system has been closed to the public as a precaution, until deemed safe by fire operations personnell. The statement says smoke from the fire may be visible to most people in Eddy County. The fire was started naturally by lightning last week and has now grown to 620 acres. It is still listed as zero percent contained.

Carlsbad Caverns Elevator Repairs Delayed

Repairs to the broken Carlsbad Caverns National Park elevator will be delayed another couple of weeks. Park officials now say the primary elevator system is expected to begin repairs on June 15th. Work to repair and modernize the elevators started back in December. The elevator system also went down in 2015 when a six inch motor shaft sheared off. The elevator was supposed to be fixed this month and have not given a reason for the delay. A secondary elevator system is now in use.

Kellar Fire Reaches 43 acres

The fire burning in Lincoln National Forest reached 43 acres on Tuesday. The Kellar Fire, as its being called, is expected to continue growing. The fire was reporteldy started by a lightning strike last week and Forestry officials said they decided to allow the fire to burn in order to restore landscape and health to an expected 2900 acres of forest. However, three hot shot crews and five engineers and a helicopter are patrolling the blaze and have been using some fire suppression efforts. About 128 fire personnell are working the fire from a number of different agencies.
