Eddy County Leaders Consider Right-To-Work Laws

Eddy County leaders have heard discussion about the possibility of instating right-to-work laws. Right now, 28 other states have similar laws that prohibit corporations and woekrs’ unions from entering into collective bargaining agreements. A number of supporters spoke at Tuesday’s commission meeting. They say that right-to-work gives the employee a choice in whether or not to join a union, which requires paying hefty union dues. But opponents argue that prohibiting right-to-work laws gives more power to big corporations and often leaves workers powerless. Artesia Representative Jim Townsend supports right-to-work laws. He says our economy is hurt because many large companies will not consider setting up shop in New Mexico when they learn that the state is NOT a right-to-work state.
