NM AG Issues Scam Warning Again

New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas is warning residents of a familiar scam that appears to have resurfaced recently. The scammers appear to be targeting senior citizens. The callers tell the potential victims that they have won a sweepstakes or lottery. They’re told not to tell anyone that a check would soon be arriving in the mail. In some cases, a check actually did arrive, but it didn’t match the name of the company used in the phone call. The scammers then tell the victim to deposit the fake check and then call another number where they’re told to go buy a gift card or send their own check to cover fees and expenses. Don’t do it. The scammers are likely out of the country. Some people also reported the scammers used the Publishers Clearing House name.
