ON JULY 28th, CARLSBAD POLICE AND FIREFIGHTERS WERE CALLED TO A HOME ON NORTH EIGHTH STRET BECAUSE OF A FIRE. WE’RE TOLD THE HOUSE WAS UNOCCUPIED AT THE TIME OF THE FIRE. IT BELONGS TO AN OUT OF TOWN COUPLE WHO HAD PLANS TO MAKE IT THEIR RETIREMENT HOME. THE FIRE DESTROYED THE HOME. INVESTIGATORS DETERMINED THE FIRE WAS INTENTIONALLY SET. Resurfacing Work Planned Along U.S. 285 North of Roswell

WORK ON A MAJOR REHABILITATION PROJECT ALONG PART OF U.S. 285 IN CHAVES COUNTY BEGINS TODAY. DARRELL MOODY HAS THE DETAILS…

THE NEW MEXICO DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION IS RESURFACING 11 MILES OF US 285 SOUTHBOUND NORTH OF ROSWELL. CREWS WILL BE WORKING BETWEEN MILE MARKERS 120 AND 131. THE SPEED LIMIT IN THE AFFECTED AREA IS REDUCED TO 50 MILES PER HOUR. MESSAGE BOARDS ARE IN PLACE TO ALERT DRIVERS. LAW ENFORCEMENT COULD ALSO BE INCREASED IN THE WORK ZONE TO ENSURE THE CREW’S SAFETY. WE’RE TOLD A SINGLE LANE CLOSURE WILL BE NECESSARY WHILE THE WORK IS BEING DONE. WEATHER PERMITTING, THE PROJECT SHOULD BE DONE BY THIS WINTER.

State Schedules Public Hearings On Pecan Weevil Quarantine

The state department of Agriculture has scheduled a series of public hearings to cover the topic of pecan weevils. The state has implemented a new quarantine area after discovery of the pest that has the potential to wipe out entire crops. Pecan Weevils were recently found in as many as 200 trees in several eastern New Mexico counties. The meeting siwll be held in Hobbs, Artesia, and Las Cruces beginning AUgust 10th. That meeting will be at the state agriculture building in Las Cruces. The Hobbs meeting will be AUgust 13th at the Agnes Kastner Community Center at 2:30 p.m. And the Artesia meeting will be Tuesday, August 14th and the Artesia Public Schools Administration Office startying at 9:00 a.m.

Still No Word On Why Two Trains Derailed Last Weekend

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad says it’s still investigating the cause of a train derailment on Sunday. ABout 20 cars of one train were seen leaning over between Artesia and Lake Arthur. The company confirmed nobody was injured and that cleanup was completed Monday. This after an earlier train derailment the day before between Dexter and Midway. KRQE says there’s no word on the cause of that derailment yet, either.
