Eddy County Joins PILT Lawsuit

Eddy County has moved to join a lawsuit over the Payment In Lieu of Taxes program by the federal government. The PILT program provides payments to counties and other local governments to offset losses in tax revenues due to the presence of substantial federal land acreage within their jurisdictions. Because local governments are unable to tax the property values or products derived from federal lands, Eddy County leaders say they believe they deserve more money than what’s been paid. The county received about 3.6 million dollars this year and 3.5 million dollars last year.
