South Y To Remain Open During Brine Well Remediation Work

The South Y highway junction in Carlsbad will remain open during all two years of the Carlsbad brine well remediation construction project. The so-called South Y consists of US Highway 285 and the junction with US Highway 62/180. It’s located directly above the underground cavity that was once an old brine well. The cavern is estimated to be at least 400 feet deep and 200 feet wide. Originally, the New Mexico Department of Transportation said that more than one lane would have to be closed. However, an alternate plan has been presented that will keep all lanes open. About 42-thousand vehicles pass through that budy highway intersection every day.
