Some Drought Conditions Improve

Although the latest drought report shows some improvement in Southeast New Mexico, much of the area remains in the “extreme drought” category. Nearly all of Chaves County is listed as “extreme drought,” althoughthe southern portion of Eddy COunty is now listed as moderate drought. The northern portion of Eddy County is listed as severe drought. New Mexico Governor Susanna Martinez’s drought order, issued in July, says that extraordinary measures may be necessary to protect public health, ensure public safety and wellbeing, and provide for the economic stability of the region. Critics, though, say the governor isn’t doing enough to help local communities deal with the drought.
