38-YEAR-OLD GILBERT CHAVES IS ACCUSED OF ATTACKING AN ARTESIA POLICE OFFICER WHO TRIED TO ARREST HIM ON AN OUTSTANDING WARRANT. INVESTIGATORS SAY CHAVEZ WAS SPOTTED WALKING NEAR THE PUBLIC SAFETY COMPLEX WHEN HE FLED TO THE NEARBY PONDEROSA RV PARK. AFTER A BRIEF SEARCH, THE OFFICER FOUND CHAVEZ, BUT WHEN THE OFFICER APPROACHED, CHAVEZ STARTED SWINGING. THE TWO STRUGGLED AND CHAVEZ WAS EVENTUALLY TAKEN INTO CUSTODY. HE WAS ALREADY WANTED ON DRUG POSSESSION CHARGES. NOW CHAVEZ IS ALSO FACING NEW CHARGES OF BATTERY ON A PEACE OFFICER, RESISTING, EVADING AND OBSTRUCTING AN OFFICER. HE’S DUE BACK IN COURT NEXT JANUARY.
