APS Superintendent Dr. Crit Caton Announces Retirement

More information now on this week’s surprise announcement by Dr. Crit Caton, the superintendent of Artesia Public Schools. At this week’s school board meeting, Caton told the board he plans to retire at the end of this school year. Caton became emotional when making the announcement. He thanked the board for allowing him to work in the “best local school district in the state.” Caton later said he has accepted a position as executive director of a private foundation in Artesia, but provided no other details. School Board President Lowell Irby said the board would first accept applications for Caton’s replacement from within the district. A special meeting is now planned for this month to review any applications received and begin interviewing potential candidates.
