WORK GETS UNDERWAY ON PHASE ONE OF THE HERMOSA AVENUE REHABILITATION PROJECT ON APRIL FIRST. TO START, THEY’RE GOING TO CLOSE THE INTERSECTION OF 26th AND WEST GRAND AVENUE SO CREWS CAN BEGIN INSTALLING NEW WATER LINES, CURB AND GUTTER, SIDEWALKS AND NEW ASPHALT. WHEN THEY’RE DONE, THE INTERSECTION WILL ALSO HAVE A NEW SCHOOL FLASHER. THE CITY OF ARTESIA SAYS THE INTERSECTION SHOULD REOPEN TO TRAFFIC BY JULY FIRST.

CREWS WITH THE ROSWELL FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED TO THE 900 BLOCK OF SOUTH MICHIGAN AVENUE AROUND 3 O’CLOCK MONDAY AFTERNOON BECAUSE A MAIL TRUCK CAUGHT FIRE. IT ONLY TOOK FIREFIGHTERS A FEW MINUTES TO GAIN CONTROL OF THE FIRE…WHICH APPEARS TO HAVE ORIGINATED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT OF THE VEHICLE. INVESTIGATORS SAY A MECHANICAL ISSUES APPEARS TO BE THE CAUSE. WE’RE TOLD THE VEHICLE IS A TOTAL LOSS…BUT THE FIRE DEPARTMENT IS REFUTING REPORTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA THAT THE VEHICLE EXPLODED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES REPORTED.

TREE AND YARD DEBRIS LEFT OVER FROM THE WIND STORM CAN BE DISPOSED OF FOR FREE AT THE LANDFILL…WITH A CURRENT WATER BILL. ALL LIMBS MUST BE CUT TO FOUR FOOT LENGHTHS, SMALLER DEBRIS MUST BE BAGGED. IF YOU’RE UNABLE TO TRANSPORT YOUR DEBRIS, YOU CAN SCHEDULE FOR GRAPPLER SERVICE TO COME PICK UP YOUR PILE. FROM MARCH 20th THROUGH THE 30th, VOLUNTEERS WILL BE HELPING NEIGHBORS COLLECT THEIR DEBRIS. ANY STORM DEBRIS DROPPED OFF AFTER THAT DATE WILL BE SUBJECT TO FEES. National Weather Service Classifies Dexter Tornado As EF-2

The National Weather Service says a tornado that destroyed or damaged numerous homes and other structures in the southern New Mexico community of Dexter traveled a path about 15 miles long and 150-350 yards wide. The weather service’s damage survey said the twister Tuesday night had estimated peak winds of 111-135 mph, rating it in one of two “strong” categories in the middle of a six-point scale. The survey said six people suffered minor injuries as the twister destroyed or substantially damaged six homes and caused lesser damage to an additional dozen structures.

EMERGENCY PERSONNEL, CITY SERVICE VEHICLES AND LOCAL RESIDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO USE 8th STREET, BUT ALL OVER TRAFFIC IS RESTRICTED. WORK HOURS FOR THE PROJECT ARE 7AM TO 5PM…THE CITY SAYS THE WORK SHOULD BE DONE BY MARCH 29th.
