State Lawmakers Approve Bill to Create Vocational High School in Hobbs

HOBBS COULD SOON BE GETTING ITS OWN CAREER AND TECHENICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM. DARRELL MOODY HAS THE DETAILS…

THE NEW MEXICO SENATE HAS APPROVED A BILL TO ALLOW A CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM TO BE CREATED IN ASSOCIATION WITH HOBBS HIGH SCHOOL. STUDENTS WOULD BE TAUGHT A SKILL OR TRADE, SUCH AS ELECTRICAL OR PLUMBING, IN ADDITION TO COMPLETING ACADEMIC CORE REQUIREMENTS. SB 576 ALSO REMOVES THE REQUIREMENT THAT A POTENTIAL VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL OR C-T-E BE LOCATED ONLY AT A POST-SECONDARY INSTITUTION. THE STRIKING OF THIS REQUIREMENT COULD AFFECT HIGH SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE STATE. THE BILL IS NOW HEADED TO THE GOVERNOR’S DESK FOR HER SIGNATURE.
