Addition of safe havens increases WIPP underground safety

The DOE says WIPP has made significant safety improvements.

Eight underground refuge chambers have arrived, and the department says they should make it underground before WIPP resumes waste disposal operations.

Each unit can house 20 people for at least 36 hours.

Work continues on the interim ventilation system, as crews start installing ductwork that ties the new system into the exhaust air ventilation circuit.

Carlsbad and the DOE soon host a town hall that offers more information. It happens Jan. 7 at 5:30 in the city council chambers.
