Safety pause at WIPP ends

The DOE says work has resumed in two underground areas at WIPP.

Work stopped last month after employees found elevated levels of carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds.

Taking a break has allowed officials to investigate these areas, and work has continued in areas the problem has not affected.

The DOE says ensuing improvements help ensure workers entering low airflow areas with potential poor air quality continue receiving enough protection.

During the break, it says all workers have received more training on using air monitoring equipment.
