NMSP Identifies Deputy Shooting Victim

Still few details surroungding the deputy-involved shooting Sunday inght in Chaves COunty. Chaves County deputies were involved in a shooting in the Midway area, south of Roswell. Sheriff Mike Harrington posted a message on his Facebook page stating that no deputies were injured, but the suspect, identified by NMSP as 31 year-old Sergio Gutierrez-Chairez was killed. Harrington has requested New Mexico State Poclie come in to investigate as a third party. All deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the investigation. Further information from state poclie indicates that Gutierrez-Chairez barricaded himself inside a truck that was parked in a driveway and ignored commands to drop a weapon and get out of the truck. Online court records show the man has previously been wanted for making threats toward the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office.
