A grass and brush fire got out of control on Sunday, causing big concern in Chaves County. A statement from Midway Fire and EMS says they were sent to US 285 and Hobson Road for a fire that was threatening structures. When they arrived, the firefighters found a fast-running grass fire in light fuels that was moving southeast. The units were able to contain the fire to about 5 acres, but it caused heavy black smoke in the area from several piles of tires that caught fire. No structures were burned.
