Officer-Involved Shooting In Roswell

An officer-involved shooting involving a Roswell Police Department
officer occurred Friday evening (June 23) about 7 p.m. in the 1600 block of West Walnut
Street.
Three RPD officers were at a residence to serve an arrest warrant on Robert Archuleta, 61,
for charges of criminal sexual contact of a minor, aggravated stalking, and bribery or
intimidation of a witness. Contact was made with Archuleta at the front door of the house.
After some discussion between officers and Archuleta, Archuleta brandished a gun and one
of the officers fired his weapon, striking Archuleta. None of the officers was injured during
this incident.
Archuleta was taken into custody and transported to a hospital. His condition was listed as
stable but serious as of Friday at 9:30 p.m.
This officer-involved shooting is being investigated by a team involving RPD, the Chaves
County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police. Following standard RPD policy, the
three officers who were at the scene when the shooting occurred will be placed on
administrative leave while the investigation takes place.
